Tooth Extractions An Overview

A tooth extraction may be recommended for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons being:

  • Overcrowded tooth
  • Damaged tooth
  • Impacted tooth
  • A decayed tooth that cannot be saved

Smile Dental Group offers a wide range of general dentistry treatment, including tooth extractions. We work closely with our patients to ensure they fully understand their treatment options and what that treatment may entail. Tooth extractions are typically performed under local anesthetic. However, for patients with a dental fear or younger patients, we offer sedation options for your comfort.

Our team of dentists at Smile Dental Group works with patients of all ages to address their dental needs. Whether you are in need of wisdom teeth extraction, simple tooth extraction, or complex tooth extraction, we work with you every step of the way to ensure your needs are met.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth typically erupt in the late teens or early twenties. In some cases, wisdom teeth don’t need to be removed; in other cases, the wisdom teeth will need to be removed to protect the integrity of the remaining teeth and avoid future dental complications.

Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if one or more of these four conditions occur:

  • Overcrowded teeth that cause the teeth to shift
  • An infection
  • Tooth or jaw pain due to wisdom teeth
  • Impacted teeth

We recommend that patients visit our office at least twice a year for a routine dental exam. During the dental exam, our team can examine the teeth and determine if wisdom tooth removal is deemed necessary.

Tooth Extractions What to Expect

After the elected choice of sedation has been administered and has taken effect, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure the extraction site is properly prepared. We take the appropriate measure to ensure our patients are comfortable and relaxed during their procedure. If needed, a digital x-ray is taken to get a comprehensive view of the tooth and the surrounding area.

The extraction site is thoroughly cleaned and your dentist will prepare the tooth by gently releasing the ligaments surrounding the tooth. The tooth is carefully rocked back and forth until it completely separates from the surrounding tissue. The tooth is pulled out and immediately cleaned. Gauze is applied to the extraction site to minimize bleeding.

It is normal to experience minimal bleeding and swelling near the extraction site. It’s important to follow any aftercare instruction to reduce the risk of infection or other complications. Our team will work with you to coordinate any other care following the tooth extraction.

Replacing Extracted Teeth

For some patients, extracted teeth will need to be replaced to restore full function to the smile. We offer a full range of tooth replacement options, including dental implants. Dental implants are one of the most top rated tooth replacement options because they offer a natural looking, long lasting solution for missing teeth.  Our team will perform a full dental exam to determine if implants are right for your smile.
